The Quality Hotel Glasgow is one of Glasgow’s oldest and original hotels, home to a wealth of stories and a hoard of history that gives it a little bit of extra magic.
Behind its grand Victorian frontage lie tales of ghosts, humor, and the stage and silver-screen stars who have wandered the grand interiors. The premises have been graced by Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Comedians Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy stayed in the hotel as well, and are known to have waved down to crowds on Hope Street from the window on the staircase leading to the lobby. When singer and cowboy actor Roy Rogers stayed in this Glasgow hotel with his wife, Dale Evans, the couple had a separate room reserved for Rogers’ horse, Trigger.
It was from the same property that John Logie Baird transmitted the first television pictures down a telephone line from a fourth floor bedroom to London on May 26, 1927. Winston Churchill also once reserved a full floor in the hotel for a two-week stay.
