Chetham’s is a unique and atmospheric location, ideal for events from seminars and meetings private dinners, concerts and weddings. Dating back to 1421, Chetham’s was built as a college for the priests of St Mary’s Parish Church (now Manchester Cathedral). It is the most complete late-medieval residential complex to survive in the north west of England. Chetham’s is named after its benefactor, Humphrey Chetham, a successful Manchester textile merchant, who left money in his will to purchase the building, and convert it into a school for 40 poor boys, and a library for scholars, the first public library in the English speaking world. Both School and Library opened in 1653. Today, the School that Chetham founded has become Chetham’s School of Music, the largest specialist music School in the UK and one of the finest anywhere in the world. The library is going strong, and remains open to all and free to use, as its founder intended.
